Elijah Cummings of the US Democratic Congress associated with the Trump impeachment investigation has died at the age of 68.
His office said he died as a result of "long-term health challenges". As chairman of the House of Representatives Oversight Committee, he had provoked many investigations into the Trump administration. He also clashed with administration officials on healthcare and immigration.
Earlier this year, during a hearing about migrant detainees, Mr. Cummings blasted Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McLennan, asking if the department had "a lack of sympathy".
President Donald Trump attacked Congress with a week-long series of tweets and comments calling his majority black Baltimore district a "disgusting, rat and rodent-infected mess". Many Democratic lawmakers called the remarks racist.
Congressmen had experienced many health problems in recent years, and received treatment for heart conditions.Prominent Democratic lawmakers - as well as President Trump and former President Barack Obama - have paid tribute to Mr. Cummings after news of his death.
