A South Carolina woman pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter on Thursday, accusing her husband of killing him with an eye drop in 2018 and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.Lana Sue Clayton was initially accused of murdering her husband.
Stephen Delvalle Clatten died on July 21, 2018, and an autopsy showed toxic levels of tetrahydrozoline, a decongestant used to relieve redness in the eyes, in his body, the York County Sheriff's Office said.
Lana Clatten was arrested the following month and confessed to administering the substance without her husband's knowledge, the sheriff's office has said.
"What a tangled web weave," according to report, Judge Paul M. Burch said on Thursday's court hearing. "Ms. Clayton, you're sure it's a trickle."
"You let him suffer for three days," the judge said. The poisoning occurred from July 19 to 21, the Sheriff's Office has said.
Lana Clayton told the judge she did not intend to kill her husband,she just wanted to make him ill,"After discovering that the vicine was the cause of death, she attempted to kill herself," she said "I couldn't live with the thought that I had done such a terrible thing."
